President's Message

Welcome!

As we begin a new term for the current officers of The Alliance, I would like to welcome you as a member, a co-worker or as an interested party to our web site. Please explore what we are doing in our Planning Districts (PD) and our committees. Check out our conference workshops and pictures.

As an introduction to our State Officers, here is a brief bio on each and how they can be reached.

Our Immediate Past-President, Catherine Sandefur, continues to be active in The Alliance. Catherine is serving on the Family Services Steering Committee and the Compensation and Classification Committee. Catherine is a Social Work Supervisor with Russell County and be reached at cls167@western.dss.state.va.us.

If you are interested in joining a committee, please contact our First Vice-President, Connie Mayes, at c2m073@dss.state.va.us. Connie has many years of experience with The Alliance in the offices of President, Immediate Past President and Second Vice-President as well serving on numerous committees. Connie can assist you with any questions about the committees such as where and when they meet and what the current focus is for that group. Most of our committees meet jointly with the League's committees and we meet with state and regional office staff to discuss your job skills and responsibilities. It is important that you take an interest in these committees, read the minutes on the web site, and talk to the committee members about your concerns. BE a committee member to voice your concerns. Connie also serves on the Personnel Committee. Connie is a Social Worker with Gloucester County.

We welcome Blair Smith as the Second Vice-President in charge of personnel development. Her biggest task is planning the conferences for our membership each spring and fall. Under her direction, the Personnel Development Committee plans the workshops for you to attend at the conferences. If you have an interest in a particular topic for a workshop, you may email Blair at smithb@charlottesville.org.If you have a particular workshop presenter who has impressed you and you feel would be an asset to our conference, email Blair with that information. Blair is a Child Care Worker with Charlottesville.

Millie Hampton has accepted the position of Third Vice-President in charge of membership. Millie has served as Parliamentarian of The Alliance for several years and is now going to be sending you the emails with information about what is going on in The Alliance. She will also accept your applications for membership at any time during the year. Millie is a Case Aide with Middlesex County. Millie can be reached at mjh119@central.dss.state.va.us.

Jeanie Taliaferro has graciously agreed to continue the position of Treasurer. She has done an outstanding job in the past years of keeping our finances in order and we are honored to have her serve us again. Jeanie is a VIEW worker with Middlesex County and her email address is tdt119@central.dss.state.va.us.

Our current Secretary, Wendy Emanuele, took on this job in the middle of a term when the previous Secretary took another job. Wendy stepped up to the plate and has done an outstanding job of keeping the minutes of our business and board meetings. She has also been our agent in getting surveys together for our web site to gather YOUR opinions in areas where The Alliance needs input so we can go to the General Assembly or to committees and voice YOUR concerns. PLEASE complete these surveys so we can better serve you. Wendy also serves as Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee and is a member of the Adult Services Committee. Wendy is a Senior Social Worker with Louisa County and can be reached at wae109@northern.dss.state.va.us.

I have recently served as Second Vice President of The Alliance and planned your state conferences for the past 2 years. What an experience! I have had the privilege of meeting many of you in that position and I know first hand that we do have many volunteers in our organization. I have served on the Marketing Committee, the Child Welfare Committee, attended Legislative meetings, testified in the General Assembly for bills, and served as my PD President for 6 years. My job is Social Work Supervisor with King William County and I have been employed in Richmond City and in King and Queen County in past years.

As you can see, your Executive Board is a talented and eclectic mix with skills in many areas and years of experience. We look forward to serving you in our positions. We need your help and input to make it work. Remember, The Alliance...The Power to Make it Happen...power comes from being united and having a voice. It is your organization and we must all work together.
If you have questions about The Alliance, whether it is about membership, committee service, conferences or anything that comes up while you are doing your job that you feel The Alliance should be taking a look at, please feel free to contact me at aqm101@central.dss.state.va.us. The Alliance is working for you.

Anne

SW Licensure comment information. Very important - response needed by Jan. 5th 2009.

 SW Licensure Letter

To All Alliance Members,

Enclosed is the report that was completed by the State Board of Social Work regarding SW licensure. We are in the process of putting together a group to look at these proposals and how they will affect the VADSS social workers. Please read them and pass them on to other social workers in your agency and in neighboring agencies who may not be members. Please encourage your non-member friends to join The Alliance and work with us to make sure we get the proper title insurance for VDSS social workers. As you read this report, please remember that:

1. This is a proposal from the state Board of Social Work.

2. The proposal will be up for public comment in December 2008

3. Then someone has to approach a member of the General Assembly and request a bill

4. Normal process of General Assembly and Governor has to sign the bill

So, it is a long way from implementation but will make monumental changes in how we are staffed within our Department.

As the proposal is being interpreted at the end of three years all people called and doing social work would need to have a SW degree (BSW or MSW) and be licensed. Licensing is achieved by making application with the Board of Social Work and taking and passing the SW licensure test.

There are a great many questions and no answers at this time.
