President's Message

Welcome to the VASWP website. We will endeavor to keep the website as current as possible. There has been a change with our state officers. Here is a brief bio and how they may be reached.

Our Immediate Past-President is Anne Mitchell. Anne served 2 years as 2nd Vice President before serving 2 ½ years as President. Anne is currently the local agency Director in King William County and is available to help with local PD development. Anne can be reached at amitchell@kingwilliamcounty.us.

If you are interested in joining a committee, please contact our First Vice-President, Tonya Cunningham, at cun14@co.henrico.va.us. Tonya is an Adult Services worker in Henrico County and President of PD 15. Tonya can assist you with any questions about the committees such as where and when they meet and what the current focus is for that group. Most of our committees meet jointly with the League's committees and we meet with state and regional office staff to discuss your job skills and responsibilities. It is important that you take an interest in these committees, read the minutes on the web site, and talk to the committee members about your concerns. Be a committee member to voice your concerns.

Blair Smith continues to do an outstanding job as the Second Vice-President in charge of personnel development. Her biggest task is planning the conferences for our membership each spring and fall. Under her direction, the Personnel Development Committee plans the workshops for you to attend at the conferences. If you have an interest in a particular topic for a workshop, you may email Blair at smithb@charlottesville.org. If you have a particular workshop presenter who has impressed you and you feel would be an asset to our conference, email Blair with that information. Blair is a Child Care Worker with Charlottesville.

The latest member of your team is Tina Vencill serving as the Third-Vice President in charge of membership. Tina will keep the membership informed of what’s happening in the Alliance. Look for the emails. Tina will accept applications for membership throughout the year. Tina is a Human Services Assistant I with Essex DSS. Tina can be reached at tina.vencill@dss.virginia.gov.

Our Secretary, Tonya Christian, is a Social Work Supervisor with Essex County. Tonya is in her first full term as Secretary. She does an excellent job of getting our meeting minutes out timely and they are posted on our website for your convenience. We are glad to have her as part of our team. Her email address is tonya.christian@dss.virginia.gov.

Jeanie Taliaferro has done an outstanding job as the treasurer. We have been honored to have such a dedicated person keeping our finances in order. Jeanie is no longer with Middlesex DSS. The position of treasurer is not filled at this time.

In 1986 five individuals, Judy English, Diane Kurfehs, James Oliver, Michael Pelfrey and Danny Edwards, saw the need to form an organization that would "create and promote understanding, fellowship, and cooperation among social work practitioners". The members of the Alliance are thankful for the insight of these five individuals. We will have an opportunity to show that appreciation as we celebrate the idea that took place 25 years ago during the Alliance Spring Conference April 27th-29th. This Celebration of Knowledge will be held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa/Short Pump April 27-29, 2011.

The Alliance is interested in maintaining a roster of retired local agency social workers who would be interested in working part time in local agencies after retirement. We have some directors who are very interested in hiring retired workers to help when there are vacancies. If you are getting ready for retirement and would like to be on this roster, please email your contact information including the program areas you have worked in to amitchell@kingwilliamcounty.us. If you know of retirees who might be interested, please have them email their contact information as well. Thank you.
